TerraVest Industries (TSE:TVK) Has Affirmed Its Dividend Of CA$0.10

TerraVest Industries Inc. (TSE:TVK) has announced that it will pay a dividend of CA$0.10 per share on the 11th of October. This payment means that the dividend yield will be 1.6%, which is around the industry average.

TerraVest Industries' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, TerraVest Industries' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 40.2% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 13% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

TerraVest Industries' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

It's comforting to see that TerraVest Industries has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CA$0.32 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of CA$0.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 2.5% per annum over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. TerraVest Industries has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 40% per annum. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

Our Thoughts On TerraVest Industries' Dividend

In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about TerraVest Industries' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think TerraVest Industries is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for TerraVest Industries (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
