Those who invested in Liquidity Services (NASDAQ:LQDT) three years ago are up 138%

Liquidity Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:LQDT) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 13% in the last quarter. But that doesn't undermine the rather lovely longer-term return, if you measure over the last three years. In fact, the share price is up a full 138% compared to three years ago. So the recent fall in the share price should be viewed in that context. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Liquidity Services became profitable within the last three years. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

We know that Liquidity Services has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? Take a more thorough look at Liquidity Services' financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Liquidity Services shareholders are down 16% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 3.1%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 15%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Liquidity Services has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.

Of course Liquidity Services may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.
