After having gone viral last year, butter candles are still melting hearts on TikTok and across social media. The unique candles have aced taste tests, but one question about butter candles remains: Are they safe to eat?

The answer to that question mostly lies in how your butter candle is made. TikToker @soozythefoodie, one of the first people to share a butter candle video on social media, offered some insight on how you can create a candle that you can eat safely.

For one, you're going to want to use a wick that is food safe. In her TikTok, @soozythefoodie used a Raw brand hemp wick. "It’s raw papers hemp wick so food safe usually I would use beeswax ones but I was at my parents house for the holidays so had to get crafty," she wrote in response to a commenter who asked if the wick used is edible.

According to Chef Michael Tashman, founder of Churn Foods, you might also come across cotton or even metal when using a non-edible wick.

“The main concern with putting together a butter candle is the wick," Chef Tashman shared with Delish. "Most wicks are made of cotton or wood, with some even having a metal core, which aren't ideal to accidentally eat as you may have a little bit (or a lot) of indigestion on your hands. Your best bet is to buy edible wicks made of organic hemp and beeswax that you can find on Amazon or in a craft store. If you avoid the wick, there’s no reason that the candle should be unsafe—you're literally just eating melting butter!"

In addition to using a food-safe wick, you're going to want to keep a careful eye on your butter candle. Like a regular candle, your butter candle shouldn't be left unattended, so don't take too long grabbing that loaf of bread from the kitchen.

Lastly, if all of this has you feeling a bit stressed, you can always purchase a pre-made butter candle on Etsy.
