During the strict lockdowns gripping the nation between July and September last year some Federal politicians were travelling when others couldn't.

While the vast majority didn’t spend anything on international travel, Prime Minister Scott Morrison racked up a rather large bill.

For others, it was their domestic travel expenses that started stacking up, with many politicians capitalising on being able to claim a standard $291 for each day of travel.

According to data from the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority, the combined travel expenses of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer for the three months between 1 July and 30 September last year was $102,875.80.

The combined total for the Opposition Leader, Shadow Deputy Prime Minister and Shadow Treasurer for the same period was $27,103.

Leader of the Labor party Anthony Albanese spent the most on domestic travel out of the group, claiming over $21,000 for 66 nights away.

Of those 66 nights, Albanese spent 51 staying at his property in Canberra that he owns.

Federal politicians are able to claim $291 a day when travelling domestically for any expenses they had, even when they’re not spending money on accommodation.
