Washington condemns arrests in Russia of hundreds of protesters

WASHINGTON, March 26 (Reuters) - The United States on Sunday condemned the arrest of hundreds of protesters in Russia, calling the action an affront to democratic values.

"We call on the government of Russia to immediately release all peaceful protesters," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement, adding that Washington was "troubled" to hear of the arrest of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny.
