'Why are the men even on MAFS Australia if they're not ready for marriage?'

'why are the men even on mafsa if they're not ready for marriage'
'Why are the men on MAFSA not ready for marriage?'Channel 4

We're 10 seasons in to Married At First Sight Australia, and our fascination with the series is ever present. It's dramatic. It's chaotic. And it's also full to the brim of male contestants who show no signs of *actually* wanting to be in a committed relationship. Perfect for a show with 'married' in the title, then.

Unless you've been living under Ayers Rock with only a kangaroo for company, you'll know the premise of MASFA intimately. The show watches relationship experts match contestants up with their ideal partner, based on their answers to a series of personality questions.

The couples then meet for the first time on their wedding day, committing to an experiment which sees them attempt to form meaningful connections after saying 'I do' at the altar. For some, it's the perfect love story: just look at Jules Robinson and Cameron Merchant from season six.

For others, though, it's more like a nightmare, with cheating scandals and catastrophic dinner parties tipping the experiment away from 'meaningful' into 'complete mayhem'.

As for the season 10 brides? The problem appears to be greater than a taste for a little drama. Instead, it feels to me like some of the male contestants aren't actually ready for commitment at all, rather heading onto the show for, well, I'm not sure what. A free dinner? To meet John Aiken in the flesh?

Take Harrison, for example, who's paired up with Bronte. Things seemed to be going swimmingly for the pair, until one of her friends revealed at the wedding that Harrison had actually been seeing someone else right before the experiment started. He'd promised a future to this other person, later adding that he'd also been seeing (and sleeping with) multiple women in the weeks prior to getting married.

And then there's Shannon, who only admitted to being in love with his ex after saying 'I do' to Caitlin at the altar, having a phone conversion with her while he was living with Caitlin in the experiment.

Also joining 'team commitment-phobe' is Cameron, who despite never having a partner or relationship before heading onto MAFSA, is sure he's ready to be a husband. Sorry, but am I missing something? What screams 'I'm ready to be committed to one person and give this marriage thing a proper go' less than sleeping with multiple other people, just days before walking down the aisle?

Can you think of a rarer scenario for someone wanting to give themselves entirely to a complete stranger, than still being caught up on an ex? Or having never had a partner at all? Where is the logic?

Of course, the contestants may well prove me wrong. Harrison has insisted he's ready to give his all to Bronte, while Shannon and Caitlin are trying to work things through. Cameron, meanwhile, has been nothing but lovely to Lyndall so far, despite never having a long-term partner before. So maybe they are ready for this commitment thing after all?

But, er, judging by the number of Married At First Sight Austalia couples still together, I won't be holding by breath.

Married At First Sight Australia continues on E4.
