Woman who stole more than $300,000 wept in court

A woman who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from her employer wept in the dock of the Auckland District Court as she was sent to prison for more than two years.

Chona Saspa used fake invoices and interfered with suppliers' bank accounts to steal more than $300,000 from OfficeMax in Auckland.

The mother of two said she needed the money for family in the Philippines.

Her lawyer Martin Heslop told the court as a first time offender, who sold everything she owned to pay back the money, she deserved a sentence of home detention.

However, Judge Kiernan said this wouldn't be enough as Saspa committed a sophisticated crime and breached a position of trust.
