Solar industry, AI chip stocks, Fed rate outlook: Market Domination

The final trading hour of the day is here, and it brought Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton to break down the biggest market (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) stories and economic themes ahead of Thursday's closing bell. In today's episode of Market Domination, Wedbush senior equity analyst Dan Ives talks chipmaker earnings for this quarter as the AI chip trade recovers from yesterday's selloff. Former Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Thomas Hoenig outlines the Fed's patience in waiting to cut interest rates, reminding officials of historical examples of what could happen if you cut rates too fast. Other top trending tickers on the Yahoo Finance platform include Abbott Laboratories (ABT) after reporting second quarter earnings, Meta Platforms (META) as it seeks to buy a stake in European sunglass maker EssilorLuxottica (EL.PA, ESLOY), Broadcom (AVGO), and Blackstone (BX) on its latest earnings print; Julie Hyman interviewed Blackstone President and COO Jonathan Gray this morning. This post was written by Luke Carberry Mogan.

Chip Stocks Have Gotten Hammered. Why the Damage Might Be Overdone.

Semiconductor stocks have gotten pounded—and some investors see a chance to buy the dip. The iShares Semiconductor ETF has dropped 8.1% from July 10 through Thursday’s close, while Nvidia stock has fallen 10%. Pushing them down: A weaker-than-expected inflation print that investors bet would give the Federal Reserve cover to cut interest rates in September; comments by former President Donald Trump that he would force Taiwan to pay for the protection it receives from the U.S.; and news this week that the Biden Administration floated the possibility of stepped-up restrictions on certain semiconductor equipment makers’ sales to China.

OpenAI holds talks with Broadcom about developing new AI chip, the Information reports

OpenAI is exploring the idea of making AI chips on its own to overcome the shortage of expensive graphic processing units that it relies on to develop AI models such as ChatGPT, GPT-4, and DALL-E3. The Microsoft-backed company is hiring former Google employees who produced the online search giant's own AI chip, the tensor processing unit, and has decided to develop an AI server chip, the report added, citing three people who have been involved. "OpenAI is having ongoing conversations with industry and government stakeholders about increasing access to the infrastructure needed to ensure AI's benefits are widely accessible," a spokesperson for OpenAI told the Information.
