The ongoing trade war is damaging some of Americans’ favorite brands, with General Motors warning Friday that tariffs could lead to a “smaller GM.”
Constellation Brands (STZ) was trading at a 12-month forward PE (price-to-earnings) ratio of 23.9x as of June 22. The company’s valuation multiple has risen by only 0.6% since the announcement of its results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2018 at the end of March.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) gains from impressive surprise history, solid brand portfolio, expansion plans and shareholder-friendly moves. Rise in Jack Daniel's prices in Europe may hurt the top line.
The price of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey will increase in the European Union because of the impact of the bloc's new 25 percent tariff. The EU is taxing a range of U.S. imports, including whiskey, in response to President Donald Trump's decision to slap tariffs on European steel and aluminum. Phil Lynch, a spokesman for Jack Daniel's producer Brown-Forman Corp., said Monday that the price increase for the whiskey will take effect over the next couple months as stockpiled cases of it are sold off.
The maker of Jack Daniel’s may be in need of a drink. Brown-Forman Corp. will have to raise prices for American whiskey sold in the European Union following the implementation of a 25 percent tariff, according to spokesman Phil Lynch. The higher prices, which he said will primarily impact Jack Daniel’s, will translate to about a 10 percent increase at the customer level.

In comments at odds with his home state's whiskey distillers, Kentucky's Republican governor is downplaying fears that the European Union's retaliatory tariffs could disrupt the booming market for the Bluegrass state's iconic bourbon industry. "There's always the potential for some type of impact, but I don't think it will be a tremendous impact," Gov. Matt Bevin said when asked about tariffs during a TV interview this week with Bloomberg. Bevin, a regular at bourbon industry events celebrating new or expanded facilities, called the tariffs that took effect Friday a "money grab" by the EU, but sounded confident that Kentucky bourbon will expand its share of the vast European whiskey market.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Much of the rye whiskey aging in hundreds of barrels at Catoctin Creek Distillery in Virginia could end up being consumed in Europe, a market the 9-year-old distilling company has cultivated at considerable cost.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Old Forester, the bourbon that launched a family dynasty and a spirits company, has returned to its pre-Prohibition Kentucky home in a newly renovated building that symbolizes the brand's comeback from years of decline.
An earlier version of this report incorrectly attributed a comment on the earnings call to Paul Varga, the outgoing CEO. It was actually made by incoming CEO Lawson Whiting. Executives on Brown-Forman Corp.’s fourth-quarter earnings call Wednesday played down concerns about the threat of tariffs on bourbon imports into Mexico and Europe, but their efforts failed to revive a flagging stock.

Brown-Forman Corp. on Wednesday reported yearlong net sales growth across its spirits lineup — including its flagship Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey brand — but said fourth-quarter earnings declined due to costs associated with the creation of a charitable foundation and operating expenses. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company said underlying net sales — or sales excluding acquisitions, divestitures and other nonrecurring events — grew by 5 percent in its U.S. markets for the entire fiscal year. It reported net sales growth in a host of key overseas markets, including double-digit increases in Mexico, Germany, Russia and Brazil, along with single-digit growth in other key markets such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland.
Jack Daniel's distributor Brown-Forman Corp. said Wednesday it had net income of $110 million, or 23 cents a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter to April 30, down from $144 million, or 30 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Chief Executive Paul Varga said earnings were driven by Jack Daniel's and its premium American whiskey brands.
