UPS Stock Tumbles After Weak Earnings Fail to Ease Freight Business Fears

United Parcel Service shares tumbled ahead of Tuesday’s opening bell after the shipping courier’s disappointing earnings signaled to investors that the freight business is still in a downturn. The stock fell 6.6% to $135.60 in premarket trading, shortly after UPS reported second-quarter profit that missed Wall Street’s targets. UPS earnings for the three months ended June 30 tumbled 30% year over year to $1.79 per share, falling well short of earnings of $1.99 a share that analysts polled by the financial data provider FactSet had predicted.
