Airbnb to restrict unauthorized New Year’s Eve parties

Yahoo Finance Live anchors Akiko Fujita and Rachelle Akuffo discuss reports that Airbnb will restrict unauthorized New Year’s Eve parties.

Video transcript

RACHELLE AKUFFO: New rules for New Year's Eve. Airbnb announcing a global crackdown on unauthorized New Year's Eve parties by guests. It will ban one-night bookings of whole home listings by certain guests, as well as restricting those same guests from booking longer reservations. I feel a bit bad because, obviously, if you'd already booked your New Year's party, this is going to come as a big blow to you. But they're putting up these defenses to try and be as respectful as they can and try and crack down on some of these parties, Akiko.

AKIKO FUJITA: Yeah, and let's sort of break down the restrictions because as you point out, Rachelle, this isn't a blanket ban on one-night bookings. This is for guests who specifically don't have a positive account history, or they haven't had previous bookings at all. And this, of course, a lot of people are thinking about this, Rachelle. Why not have a party, right? You go rent out a big space for New Year's Eve, and Airbnb says, well, that's not exactly respectful of the platform's rules.

Now, they did rule the rollout, this specific feature in a very limited capacity. And they have said last year, that led to 340,000 guests globally being blocked or redirected from attempting to be booked on Airbnb. This year, they're rolling it out in 11 countries, including Spain, the UK, Netherlands, Portugal, Ireland. So be warned if you are out there, trying to plan a party on Airbnb. It's not going to go over quite smoothly.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: I mean, I wonder why they picked these 11 countries. I mean, I know in the UK, we like to party, but I don't know about singling out these particular 11 countries. Feel a little bit attacked through that. But I mean, obviously, they're trying to, as you mentioned-- they have this criteria. They're trying to keep things respectful, keep people wanting to get more on the platform. We know that they've been trying to get more people on the platform as renters. So, you know, I do understand. I do understand.
