Egyptian climate activists gear up for COP27

STORY: Egyptian climate activists are cleaning up beaches ahead of COP27

Location: Alexandria, Egypt

The cleanup initiative Banlastic Egypt was created in 2018

It hosts a campaign to replace single-use plastics

[Manar Ramadan, Co-founder / Banlastic Egypt Initiative]

“This year we are conducting a series of events named ’27 Walks and Talks’ ahead of COP27 which Egypt is hosting this year in November in Sharm El-Sheikh. We spread environmental awareness about various things, not just plastic. The cleanup event today is one of the 27 events we are conducting this year; we are cleaning the public beach of Dekheila, and we target public beaches specifically because people need awareness about the problem of the waste they leave behind, and of course, in a city like Alexandria, we suffer a lot in the summer from the problem of waste.”

The COP27 summit takes place from November 7-18 in Sharm el-Sheikh
