Papa John’s unveils ‘Game of Thrones’-inspired ‘Dragon Flame’ pizza

Yahoo Finance’s Allie Canal joins the Live show to taste test Papa John’s ‘Game of Thrones’-inspired ‘Dragon Flame’ pizza.

BRIAN CHEUNG: HBO's "House of the Dragon" set to premiere this upcoming Sunday. And what better to celebrate the "Game of Thrones" prequel than with a slice of pizza. Yahoo Finance's Alexandra Canal has a hot lead on where you can get some.

ALLIE CANAL: I mean--

BRIAN CHEUNG: Right here apparently.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Right here, Papa John's. They say this is their spiciest pizza yet and honor of the "Game of Thrones" prequel. This is called the Dragon Flame Pizza. I just want to read off some of these ingredients-- sriracha dry spice, smoked pulled chicken, Italian sausage, fresh green peppers, melty cheese, chilies, dusted with a garlic and red chili crunch. So apparently, it's supposed to be pretty hot. We'll see if it is. I know--

BRIAN CHEUNG: I'll be the judge of that.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I know you have a pretty high spice tolerance, Bri.

BRIAN CHEUNG: OK. The problem with spice is that it might kick in a little bit late. So hopefully by the end of this segment, you know, we'll know for sure. But it tastes like a regular pizza to me. First of all--

AKIKO FUJITA: It's good, though.

BRIAN CHEUNG: It tastes like a regular pizza.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Yeah. It is good.

AKIKO FUJITA: The spice level is not that high. But it tastes good.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: It is good. I wouldn't say there's no spice, but I wouldn't say, I need a glass of milk.

BRIAN CHEUNG: We're talking about three high spice tolerance people, though, [INAUDIBLE]

AKIKO FUJITA: So let's talk about Papa John's, though. I mean, in terms of this partnership, you know, why HBO? Obviously, we're talking about it here, but.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I think they are just trying to connect more with the consumer and be as innovative as possible because we have seen sales of Papa John slow. In its most recent quarter, North American sales jumped just around a little less than 1%. And if you compare that to 2020, those sales soared 28%. So there is a significant slowdown there. They're trying to be innovative.

They have the Papa Bowls that just came out. That was highly debated. It's basically a crustless bowl of pizza toppings. And now, we have this latest collab with HBO. We know people love "Game of Thrones." And they're hoping to drum up a little bit more excitement amid the overall pizza slowdown.

AKIKO FUJITA: They're certainly generating buzz, right?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Oh, yeah, for sure.

AKIKO FUJITA: The spice does kick in a little later.

BRIAN CHEUNG: A little bit. It's really not--

AKIKO FUJITA: But it's not bad. It's not bad.

BRIAN CHEUNG: I'm just all about the garlic sauce when it comes to Papa John's.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I know I just saw you drown--

BRIAN CHEUNG: I know.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: You just drowned that pizza in garlic sauce. I am impressed.

BRIAN CHEUNG: I am a super fan. Yeah, but--

AKIKO FUJITA: Hey, and that's the way you eat Papa John's, right? That's what they're known for, their sauces.

BRIAN CHEUNG: The producers are a little disgusted by it, though. So I think we'll have to say goodbye on this segment for right now. Yahoo Finance's Alexandra Canal, thanks so much.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Cheers.

BRIAN CHEUNG: Really appreciate it. Cheers.
