Protesters march on Sri Lanka's Independence Day

STORY: Sri Lanka, caught in the worst financial crisis since independence from Britain in 1948 triggered by a severe shortage of dollars, has seen steep inflation, a currency plunge and its economy slide into recession.

Wasantha Mudalige, convenor of the Inter University Student Federation, said people could not afford three meals and that the country was in crisis.

But despite this, he said, the government was holding a major celebration for Independence Day.
