China's commerce ministry on Thursday said it firmly objects to the United States raising tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminium products and will take all necessary measures to protect its rights. U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday called for sharply higher tariffs on Chinese metal products, which angered Beijing. "We urge the U.S. to face up to its own problems, stop raising tariffs on Chinese products, and immediately lift the additional tariffs on China," a spokesperson for the ministry said in a statement.
Higher tool prices are causing U.S. repair technicians to cut back on spending, denting demand for Snap-On's smaller wrenches and ratchets. Sales at the company's "Commercial & Industrial" division, which caters to critical industries such as transportation, military, aerospace and power generation, fell to $359.9 million in the quarter from $363.8 million last year due to weak demand for power tools. U.S. lender Comerica on Thursday reported a 57.4% fall in its quarterly profit as higher deposit costs hurt its interest income from customers. Comerica's net interest income (NII), which is the difference between interest income from loans and what banks pay out on deposits, fell nearly 23% to $548 million in the first quarter compared with the previous year. Dallas-based Comerica continues to expect 11% drop in its net interest income in 2024.
