Rihanna to headline the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show

Yahoo Finance's Allie Canal joins the Live show to discuss reports that Rihanna will be headlining this year's Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Video transcript

AKIKO FUJITA: Rihanna is getting to work as she gears up to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, which is recently announced will be sponsored by Apple Music. Let's bring in Yahoo Finance's Allie Canal, who's following this story. Allie, there are so many Rihanna references we can go to, right, in the lead-up. We got a full one. How many months? But this is a big name, especially for Apple's debut, or Apple Music's debut, with the halftime show.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I think so. And Akiko, I love it. Getting to work, take a bow. You guys are getting in all your puns, which, as the pun queen, I very much appreciate. But there were rumors over the weekend that we could potentially see Taylor Swift, but I think Rihanna is just as big of a name. Rihanna, the NFL, as well as producer Roc Nation, posting this Instagram confirming the news.

And it's an interesting full circle moment for Rihanna as well, considering she turned down the halftime show in 2019 in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. Since then, the league has made several changes, including the appointment of Jay-Z's Roc Nation to oversee the halftime show. Rihanna is managed by Roc Nation and signed to its record label.

But speaking of record labels and new music, Rihanna hasn't performed on stage since 2018. Her last album was released in 2016. She is currently working on her ninth studio album. Fans have been anxiously awaiting that, but we really haven't seen anything new from RiRi. So I think fans are really excited to see her back on stage.

She's been able to create this whole other empire outside of music. According to Forbes, she is worth $1.7 billion, thanks, in large part, to businesses like her lingerie line, Savage X Fenty, along with some makeup, skincare brands. And we know the halftime show always leads to those boosts and downloads. So I think that net worth is going to go even higher in 2023, especially if we can finally see this new album.
