Senate to vote on final passage of same-sex marriage bill

Yahoo Finance's Jennifer Schonberger provides an update on same-sex marriage legislation making its way through Congress.

Video transcript

RACHELLE AKUFFO: Now to Capitol Hill, and the Senate is set to vote on the final passage of a bipartisan bill protecting same-sex and interracial marriage. Joining us now from Washington, DC is Yahoo Finance's Jennifer Schonberger. So Jen, what can we expect here?

JENNIFER SCHONBERGER: Good morning, Rachelle. The Senate poised to vote on legislation that seeks to codify same-sex marriage into law. This coming after lawmakers' concerns that the high court could overturn its landmark decision in 2015. This coming, of course, after the high court overturned Roe v. Wade, sparking fears that same-sex marriage rights could be taken away as well.

Now, 12 Republican senators have joined with Democrats in the upper House, where this bill is expected to pass. From there, it will head to the House, which is still controlled by Democrats in this lame duck session, where it is also expected to pass. From there, President Biden has pledged to sign this legislation as soon as later this week.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: All right, great stuff. Thank you. Jen Schonberger there, reporting for us.
