Stocks mixed at open, energy stocks gain momentum

Yahoo Finance Live’s Brad Smith breaks down how markets opened on Tuesday amid China’s plans to reopen cities that were shut down due to the rise in COVID-19 outbreaks.

Video transcript

JULIE HYMAN: We'll get kind of a good read on sentiment and what people are talking about. So there's the opening bell on this Tuesday with that mixed open that we have been watching for is now going on.

BRIAN SOZZI: There it is, like every day at 9:30.

BRAD SMITH: We're doing it again.

JULIE HYMAN: That's all you got?

BRIAN SOZZI: That's all I got today.

JULIE HYMAN: I thought you were going to have some--

BRIAN SOZZI: No, opening bell.

JULIE HYMAN: --insight for us.

BRIAN SOZZI: No, SP Funds, I don't really know anything about them.

JULIE HYMAN: Apparently, it is a new ETF.

BRIAN SOZZI: Cool.

JULIE HYMAN: OK. Let's take it on over to Brad then. It looks like you're starting with some of the China names? No?

BRAD SMITH: No, I'm going to just talk a little over--

JULIE HYMAN: OK, let's go somewhere else.

BRAD SMITH: --keeping track for this year. In the name of SP Funds, let's take a look at the Dow Jones Industrial Average here on the day. They're down by about 2/10 of a percent for the Dow. We put that on a two-day view here, just to give you a look at where we've had some of the activity kind of kick off this week as well.

The NASDAQ composite, you're seeing that flat, just barely to the upside right now. That's carrying some losses over the past two days, down by about 1 and 1/2%. We'll see what we can do to kind of claw back some of those declines. And then additionally here, the S&P 500, you're seeing that flat, just barely to the downside as well, out of the gate here this morning.

Let's take a look at some of the sector activity, though, that we're seeing here on the day. On our YFi Interactive, we've got a handy dandy look at the 11 S&P 500 sectors. We're relatively split, or about as split as you could get, for 11 sectors here. It looks like more advancers than decliners, though, as of right now. It looks like energy is leading the charge right now. That's up by about 1.7%. However, utilities bringing up the caboose. That's down by about 1% here out of the gate on the day here.

And then just lastly, let's ride out with a view of the NASDAQ 100 as well, just to see exactly where things are trending right now, as we are on this Giving Tuesday. Perhaps, you're feeling charitable out there, folks, but some of the major averages as well, they are feeling-- or some of the major movers here on the NASDAQ 100, they are feeling a little bit too charitable, giving back some of their gains that they've seen as well here, so.

JULIE HYMAN: Yeah, I guess so. All right.
