U.S. Olympic swimmer charged in Capitol riots

A gold medal-winning Olympic swimmer was among those arrested in connection with the U.S. Capitol siege last week, the Department of Justice said on Wednesday (January 13).

Five-time Olympic medalist Klete Keller, who was a former relay teammate to Michael Phelps, was accused of civil disorder, unlawful entry and disorderly conduct in a criminal complaint.

The complaint includes images that allegedly show Keller in the Capitol rotunda with a U.S. Olympic Team patch on his jacket.

USA Swimming did not respond when asked to confirm Keller's identity in the mob and attempts to reach him personally were unsuccessful.

The Justice Department said it had brought at least 70 cases in connection with the deadly riot at the Capitol last week, where supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building.

Many of those arrested were captured on video and in photos, with some bragging about their actions. The FBI has been scouring more than 100,000 images and videos as it tries to track down suspects.

Some have been arrested on less serious charges, such as unlawful entry, while others may face steeper charges like seditious conspiracy or felony murder in conncection with the death of a Capitol Police officer.

Others arrested on Wednesday include a man clad in a 'Camp Auschwitz' sweatshirt, two off duty police officers from Virginia, and a Proud Boys supporter who has applied to become a member, according to his trial records.
