"We're looking at a massive package of investment now in jobs and growth ... in the short, medium and long term," he told parliament.

He said the government was also going to come forward with more measures, but ruled out a simple extension of the existing furlough scheme.

Johnson went on to promise to help companies trying to save jobs put at risk by the pandemic.

"These are indeed tough times, and I have no doubt that many businesses, many employees are feeling a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty, and we will do our level best to protect them throughout this period," Johnson said.
