The U.S. government will pay the vaccine maker Moderna $176 million to develop a pandemic vaccine that could be used to treat bird flu in people as cases in dairy cows continue to mount across the country, federal officials announced Tuesday. The funds are targeted for release through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and will pay for continued development of a vaccine that uses the same mRNA technology that allowed rapid development and rollout of vaccines to protect against COVID-19.

US workplace safety agency proposes protections from extreme heat
The Biden administration on Tuesday unveiled a long-awaited proposal that would require many U.S. employers to protect 36 million workers from extreme heat. The proposed rule from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which enforces workplace safety laws, would require employers to provide workers with water and shaded or air-conditioned areas to take breaks when temperatures at indoor or outdoor work sites reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). At 90 F, workers would be guaranteed 15-minute breaks every two hours and employers would be required to monitor workers for heat-related illness.

US to block Tempur Sealy's $4 billion buy of retailer Mattress Firm
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is preparing to sue to block the $4 billion merger between mattress manufacturer Tempur Sealy International Inc and retailer Mattress Firm, a source familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Tempur Sealy had announced the cash-and-stock deal in May 2023, seeking to add Mattress Firm's more than 2,300 brick-and-mortar store locations. The combined company would have about 3,000 stores globally.
