Global VPN usage rockets amid ongoing conflicts

Yahoo Finance's Akiko Fujita breaks down the chart of the day showing VPN usage in various countries around the world.

Video transcript

AKIKO FUJITA: Well, time for our Chart of the Day. And let's stay with tech. Google says a subsidiary, which allows third parties to create VPNs or Virtual Private Networks, has seen a huge spike in demand from Iran amid ongoing protests in the nation.

It's part of a much bigger theme, however. According to Statista, demand for VPN downloads in Iran increased by 3,000% in September. And that's not all. According to TopVPN100.com, Sri Lanka, Russia, and Azerbaijan have also seen massive increases in the use of these networks this year amid ongoing conflicts globally. And certainly, no surprise, seeing that big spike over in Iran given the protests we've seen play out over the last several weeks.
