Portfolio manager sees 'end of an era for stocks'

STORY: Smead said he bases his thesis on data from the St. Louis Federal Reserve that tracks "equities as a percentage of household financial assets."

According to Smead, the research shows that household stock ownership is at an all-time high - but that prior high points were followed by decades that were "terrible for investors."

So when will the market start to head south?

"I think it really plays back to what [Warren] Buffett has talked about over the years," Smead said. "When the clock strikes twelve, everything goes back to pumpkins and mice... I think that's the inherent issue. You know looking back what has transpired. But in the midst of manias, it's very hard to hold back and not participate in the mania yourself."
