UPDATE 1-Singapore's DBS appoints Ping An Technology CEO as chief information officer

(Adds details about OneConnect in paragraph 8)

SINGAPORE, May 8 (Reuters) - Singapore's biggest bank DBS Group said on Wednesday that it has appointed Ping An Technology's chairman and CEO Eugene Huang as its chief information officer (CIO) effective Friday.

Huang, who is joining from Ping An Group, has over 36 years of technology and banking experience and will report to DBS Group CEO Piyush Gupta in his new role, DBS said in a statement on Wednesday.

"His immediate focus will be to build on the work the bank has done since last year to strengthen our technology resiliency," Gupta said in the statement.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced on April 30 that it ended DBS's six-month ban from acquiring new businesses or making non-essential IT changes after DBS addressed problems that had disrupted its digital banking services in 2023.

But two days later on May 2, DBS experienced disruptions with its online and mobile banking again, which prompted MAS to follow up with DBS to identify the root cause of the issues, The Strait Times reported.

Huang will take over the CIO role from Han Kwee Juan, who has been double-hatting as DBS acting CIO and Singapore country head since November 2023, according to DBS.

Following this, Han will return full-time to being Singapore country head from June 1, DBS added.

Prior to his latest role at Ping An, Huang was Deputy General Manager, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer at OneConnect, a technology services platform for financial institutions launched by Ping An in 2015.
