14-Year-Old Girl Critically Injured After Being Hit by Haunted Hayride Tractor

Authorities in Rhode Island said the teen "got caught up underneath the trailer and got dragged enlarged with the rear wheels”

A 14-year-old girl was hit by a tractor and reportedly in critical condition during a haunted hayride event Saturday in Rhode Island, according to reports.

The incident occurred at Seven Cedars Farm in Smithfield, NBC affiliate WWLP-TV reported. The teen, who was working as an actor at the farm, got run over by a tractor towing a haunted hayride and was caught under the trailer’s back tires.

Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini said, per NBC affiliate WJAR-TV: “The individual that was struck was an employee there, she was an actor there, and she got caught up underneath the trailer and got dragged enlarged with the rear wheels.”

“It was fortunate the operator of the tractor when he realized there was a problem going on behind him stopped it immediately, he was assisted by other occupants that were on that trailer and physically had to lift it up,” Quattrini added, per WJAR.

Authorities added that the teen was in critical condition, per WJAR's report. Quattrini told CBS affiliate WPRI that the victim has internal injuries with fractures to the lower extremities.

WPRI also reported that the teen is a student at Smithfield High School, according to Smithfield Public Schools Superintendent Dawn Bartz. According to the school official, the accident was witnessed by members of the community, among them some of the high school students.

“I would like our families to know that we have a full counseling support team in place at Smithfield High School to assist students beginning Monday morning, Bartz said, per the outlet.

Seven Cedars Farms shared a Facebook post on Sunday announcing that it will close for the remainder of its haunted hayride season following the incident.

“We are absolutely devastated by this incident and we want to send our thoughts and prayers to the actor and her family involved,” the post read. “We are completely heartbroken over this and we hope she has a speedy recovery!”

The farm also thanked the local police and fire departments, as well as its staff, for the care that was given to the injured teen.

“We apologize that we had to stop the hayride but we felt like it was the right thing to do and there was no way we [could've] carried on after that,” continued the post. “We apologize to those on the wagon itself who had to witness this incident and are truly grateful to those who stepped in to help at the scene.”

Both WPRI and WWLP reported that the incident is being investigated. PEOPLE reached out to the Smithfield Police Department, the Smithfield Fire Department and Seven Cedars Farm for comment Monday.
