Here's Why I Think BQE Water (CVE:BQE) Is An Interesting Stock

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like BQE Water (CVE:BQE). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

BQE Water's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, BQE Water has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. It's good to see that BQE Water's EPS have grown from CA$0.46 to CA$0.54 over twelve months. That's a 20% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. BQE Water's EBIT margins have fallen over the last twelve months, but the flat revenue sends a message of stability. Does that sound particularly bullish? No, it does not.

Since BQE Water is no giant, with a market capitalization of CA$40m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are BQE Water Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that BQE Water insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 54% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. In terms of absolute value, insiders have CA$21m invested in the business, using the current share price. That's nothing to sneeze at!

Does BQE Water Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for BQE Water is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 2 warning signs for BQE Water that you should be aware of.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
