How Many Insiders Sold Navient Corporation (NASDAQ:NAVI) Shares?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we’ll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Navient Corporation (NASDAQ:NAVI).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It’s quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Colombia University study found that ‘insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers’.

Navient Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by Chief Risk & Compliance Officer and Senior VP Stephen Hauber for US$251k worth of shares, at about US$14.40 per share. That is hardly a positive sign, even though it took place above the latest price (US$8.43). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Stephen Hauber was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership of Navient

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Navient insiders own 1.0% of the company, currently worth about US$22m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Navient Tell Us?

There haven’t been any insider transactions in the last three months — that doesn’t mean much. We don’t take much encouragement from the transactions by Navient insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. Therefore, you should should definitely take a look at this FREE report showing analyst forecasts for Navient.
