TREASURIES-U.S. bonds build on rally as inflation slows
U.S. Treasuries rallied in Asia trade on Thursday as signs of cooling inflation and a slowing U.S. economy were seen as opening the door to a couple of interest rate cuts this year. Two-year yields fell three basis points (bps) to touch a six-week low of 4.705%. Ten-year yields, which dropped 9 basis points on Wednesday, fell a further 4 bps to 4.313%, also a six-week low.

Japan's economy shrinks on weak consumer spending, auto woes
The Japanese economy shrank at an annual rate of 2% in the first quarter of this year, as consumption and exports declined, the government said Thursday. Although unemployment has stayed relatively low in the world’s fourth largest economy at about 2.6%, wage growth has been slow and prices have risen partly due to weakness of the yen against the U.S. dollar. Quarter-to-quarter, the preliminary seasonally adjusted gross domestic product, or GDP, a measure of the value of a nation’s products and services, slipped 0.5% in the January-March period, according to the Cabinet Office.

Japan's Nikkei rides tech rally higher amid US inflation optimism
Japan's Nikkei share average rose on Thursday as technology stocks tracked their overseas peers higher after U.S. consumer prices boosted market expectations for the Federal Reserve to cut rates in September. "The mood is one of relief," said Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com. "If nothing else, (Wednesday's CPI) says a serious discussion about the need for further hikes has been taken off the table."

TSMC says no damage to its Arizona facilities after incident
Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC said on Thursday there was no damage to its facilities after an incident at its Arizona factory construction site where a waste disposal truck driver was transported to hospital. Firefighters responded to a reported explosion on Wednesday afternoon at the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company plant in Phoenix, the Arizona Republic reported, citing the local fire department. TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker whose clients include Apple and Nvidia, said in a statement none of its employees or onsite construction workers had reported any related injuries.

UPDATE 1-China's Nio aims to launch one new car model per year under Onvo brand
Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio said on Thursday it would launch one new model per year under its lower-priced Onvo brand and price them similarly to gasoline vehicles, as the firm expands its lineups to family cars in the country's overcrowded auto market. Nio executives were speaking a day after the company unveiled the Onvo L60 SUV with a sticker price starting from 219,900 yuan ($30,476), 12% below the price of Tesla's Model Y which starts at 249,900 yuan in China. Nio said on Thursday it would have a second Onvo model targeting larger families coming up next and expected the newly launched brand to positively contribute to its overall profitability when monthly sales reach 20,000 units.

Russia says it destroys five Ukraine-launched ATACMS missiles over Crimea
The Russian defence ministry said on Thursday that its air defence forces destroyed five long-range missiles known as ATACMS that Ukraine's military launched overnight at Crimea. The ministry did not provide any evidence that Ukraine used the U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, that Washington said earlier this week were already reaching the Ukrainian forces. The Russian defence ministry did not say in its statement on the Telegram messaging app whether there was any damage as a result of the attack.

Australian jobless rate rises in April, erasing risk of rate hike
Australian employment rose by more than expected in April, data showed on Thursday, but the jobless rate still climbed to a three-month top as the growth in workforce outpaced job creation. The jump in unemployment was seen as erasing any chance of a further rate hike from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), a big swing from early in the month when the probability had been as high as 40%. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed net employment rose 38,500 in April from March, topping forecasts for a bounce of 23,700.
