Beyoncé, or Cowboy Carter as she may now be referred to, has finally unveiled the artwork and inspiration behind her inaugural upcoming country album.
Cowboy Carter, or Act II, which Bey confirmed the release of during her appearance in a Verizon commercial during the 2024 Super Bowl and which is the follow-up to Renaissance, will be coming on March 29.
'This album has been over five years in the making,' Beyoncé wrote in her Instagram post announcing the album's release. 'It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.' In 2016, the singer faced backlash from the country music community after releasing 'Daddy Issues', a country-inspired single. Fast forward eight years and upon releasing two singles, '16 Carriages' and 'Texas Hold 'Em', from Cowboy Carter after this year's Super Bowl, became the first Black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart.

'The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii [Cowboy Carter] is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work,' Bey wrote. 'I have a few surprises on the album, and have collaborated with some brilliant artists who I deeply respect. I hope that you can hear my heart and soul, and all the love and passion that I poured into every detail and every sound.'
As the star made clear in her initial Instagram post, Cowboy Carter isn't just a country album, 'It's a Beyoncé album.'
During the Super Bowl advert, for which Bey is rumoured to have been paid $30 million (£27 million), the star tried — but failed — to break the internet a number of times before saying: ‘OK, they ready. Drop the new music.’
Shortly after the advert was broadcast, a clip was posted to Beyoncé’s Instagram, teasing the single 'Texas Hold ‘Em' and asserting that Cowboy Carter will drop in March.
Fans have speculated that two of the collaborators on the album could be Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. But as of March 27, Beyoncé has dropped the Cowboy Carter tracklist via Instagram.
The vintage graphic-inspired post details 27 tracks, including the highly anticipated cover of country classic 'Jolene', which was rumoured by Dolly Parton earlier in March.
The tracklist also mentions 'Dolly P' and another country icon, Willie Nelson, but it's yet unclear whether these mentions refer to actual appearances on the album. Another song, 'The Linda Martell Show', is a reference to one of the first commercially successful Black female artists in country music.
Beyoncé has previously confirmed that Renaissance is a ‘three act project.’
‘This three act project was recorded over three years during the pandemic,' Beyoncé wrote in the notes accompanying Renaissance upon its release in July 2022. ‘A time to be still, but also a time I found to be the most creative.’
To attend the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year, the Texas native wore a cowboy hat, which many of her fans interpreted to be a hint as to the star’s new musical foray.
Bey isn’t the first female star to dip their toe into the country music pond of late. Lana Del Rey confirmed in February that her country album, Lasso, is on its way, while country musician Kacey Musgraves' fifth album, Deeper Well, was released earlier this month.
