Bruce Thorn Bought 8.2% More Shares In Big Lots \

Investors who take an interest in Big Lots, Inc. (NYSE:BIG) should definitely note that the CEO, President & Director, Bruce Thorn, recently paid US$4.85 per share to buy US$248k worth of the stock. While that's a very decent purchase to our minds, it was proportionally a bit modest, boosting their holding by just 8.2%.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Big Lots

Notably, that recent purchase by Bruce Thorn is the biggest insider purchase of Big Lots shares that we've seen in the last year. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$6.07. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Does Big Lots Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 6.4% of Big Lots shares, worth about US$11m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Big Lots Tell Us?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Big Lots we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Big Lots (including 2 which don't sit too well with us).

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies.

For the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. We currently account for open market transactions and private dispositions, but not derivative transactions.
