Those who have already read Michelle Zauner (also known as Japanese Breakfast)’s heartbreaking, bestselling memoir Crying In H Mart will know exactly the kind of rollercoaster ride of emotions the book takes you on. But if you haven’t had a chance to pick up a copy yet, or were wondering if it would be adapted for the big or small screen, we have good news – Crying In H Mart is being turned into a movie!

Here's what we know about the movie adaptation so far, from who will be directing it, to who will be providing the movie’s soundtrack.

When was the Crying In H Mart adaptation confirmed?

The book was originally released in April 2021, with it being announced that MGM’s Orion Pictures had acquired the rights to the Crying in H Mart movie adaptation, only a few months later.

We got a further update in March of last year when Michelle, speaking to Consequence, revealed that she had just finished the first draft of her screenplay.

But this week (20th March) brought an exciting new development – The White Lotus’ Will Sharpe will be directing the project.

Who will be part of the Crying In H Mart adaptation?

Now, you will certainly recognise the director of the Crying In H Mart movie adaption, even if you weren’t aware that he was a BAFTA Award-nominated writer and director. Most of us will have watched him in the second season of The White Lotus, where he played Ethan.

“It was a daunting task, to find someone I could trust with the retelling of such a personal story. Someone who could honor my mother’s character and respect the darkest days of grief, and still make the coming of age of a half Korean artsy outsider in a small Pacific Northwest hippie town seem real and cool,” Michelle reveals on her Instagram feed.

“In that spirit, I am so relieved to have found Will Sharpe and am beyond delighted that he will be the director of Crying in H Mart. I believe his sensitivity, as a director and an actor, and his own personal experience, having also grown up between two cultures, will be tremendous assets,” she adds.

Producers Stacey Sher (Erin Brockovich) and Jason Kim (Barry) also join, while Japanese Breakfast – the indie pop band led by Michelle – will quite aptly provide the film's soundtrack.

What happens in the Crying In H Mart book?

Crying in H Mart was a permanent fixture on bestselling lists and even appeared in Barack Obama’s annual favourites list for 2021. And we simply couldn't put it down when we read it. Let's just say, you may need some tissues at the ready as you make your way through it.

Per Variety, MGM describes the book as a, “coming-of age story about a half-Korean daughter who returns to small town Oregon to care for her Korean mother. Critical and smothering Chong-mi and creative and independent Michelle struggle to understand each other across a cultural fault line, only learning to see and accept one another through the formative power of music and the vibrant flavors of Korean cooking.”

We can’t wait to see who will star in the adaptation or when it will hit the big screen…
