Fletcher to bring 2,200 people back to central Chch

Creating three vibrant new communities to bring up to 2,200 people back to central Christchurch is the vision of Fletcher Residential’s plan for the East and North Frame Residential Precinct.

Fletcher Building’s Construction Division Chief Executive Graham Darlow is thrilled Fletcher Residential has been appointed the preferred development partner for the project which will see approximately 940 townhouses and apartments built in the next eight to nine years.

"Our vision is to help return the beating heart to Christchurch City. We want to protect the precious and familiar while rejuvenating the city with three distinct but linked housing areas that provide diverse living for all."

The new housing areas - Avon, Latimer and Lichfield - will reflect their location and local landmarks. They will appeal to diverse groups of people, with varied architecture and housing types using sustainable design. The master plan for the development includes playgrounds, parks and other public spaces with streets, footpaths and laneways for ease of access. The plan will be brought to market under the Fletcher Living brand.

Chief Operating Officer, Housing, Steve Evans said the master plan will enhance existing features such as the Avon River, Latimer Square and the MED building as well as reinforcing other nearby aspects of Christchurch’s rebuild including the Margaret Mahy Family playground, Linear Park and the neighbouring Innovation Precinct.

"We are all about creating communities where people want to live from the first stages of the project through to completion. One example is our commitment to provide $1 million towards a fund to initiate activities that draw people back into the city and put the empty lots to good use before they are developed."

He said Fletcher Living will consult with the public on the types of initiatives but is considering activities such as weekly markets, sporting and community events that enliven city life.

Fletcher Living plans to start selected building in each area simultaneously and then build out from there. Construction on the first homes will commence approximately 18 months after the signing of a development agreement which is expected to be in November this year.

Fletcher Building is committed to the rebuild of Christchurch. Other Fletcher Building projects in Canterbury include Colombo and Welles housing developments, Awatea and Carrs Rd housing developments, The University of Canterbury Regional Science and Innovation Centre, the Grand Central retail and commercial development and the Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct.
