Aussies snapped up lithium stocks and index funds in 2022, despite ongoing share market volatility.

Stake’s ‘Stockest 100’ report revealed the most popular stocks and ETFs of 2022, based on the more than 1 million ASX trades made on the platform last year.

“2022 was a tough year for investors, as increased interest rates impacted overall returns. And given the historically low rates we've seen following the GFC, many experienced the dramatic effect that higher rates can have on the markets for the first time,” Stake market analyst Megan Stals said.

“Despite this, investors didn’t panic and continued to add to their positions, with 68 per cent of trading activity consisting of buy orders.”

Lithium was the most popular segment in 2022, with record-high prices driving interest in the metal.

Core Lithium (CXO) was the most popular company on Stake, seeing 78 per cent returns for the year,” Stals said.

“That said, it wasn’t an easy ride for shareholders, with the stock experiencing large peaks and troughs throughout the year.”

Index funds were also popular as investors switched to a “dollar cost averaging strategy” in the volatile market.

“The Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF (VAS) was the most popular by far, showing how Australians are optimistic about the long-term prospects of the local economy,” Stals said.

The Vanguard ETF also took out Stake’s 2022 People’s Choice Award for favourite stock of the year.
