Rihanna is prioritizing creating a connection to her roots as she raises her two sons.

In her interview with Vogue China, the "Disturbia" singer, 36, shared why hair braiding is so important to her, explaining that braids have long been a way for her to channel self-expression and creative experimentation. Since becoming a mom to her sons RZA, 22 months, and Riot, 7 months, with partner A$AP Rocky, 35, the singer says the power of hair has become even more important.

"This is a form of protection by our ancestors...[it] makes us realize where we've come from," the mom of two shares. "This is our lost history. I immediately wanted my children to have their hair braided...it's something in our blood."

In August, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Rihanna and Rocky welcomed a second baby boy, son Riot Rose, to the family.

In the fall, the famous couple posed for a series of adorable photos that featured the couple's newborn baby, as well as son RZA.

Rihanna held baby Riot while Rocky carried the couple's older son on his shoulders, posing together for the first time as a family of four. RZA, who wore the newly released FENTY x Puma Avanti in aged silver, donned an adorable miniature leather jacket. The musician was also photographed carrying her newborn alone as she leaned up against a car.

Other pictures featured the happy couple playing with Riot on a blanket while he grinned up at his parents.

In an interview with Page Six in December, Rihanna opened up about her relationship with Rocky, noting that their connection has gotten deeper since the couple welcomed their two kids together.

"I love him differently as a dad. This is major, major...it's a turn on," she told the outlet. "It's just like, wow. What a leader, what a great, patient loving...and my kids are obsessed with him."
